Come Celebrate the Revival of Edenton's Historic Courthouse Clock

Chowan County Courthouse clock restoration underway, man with clock.

Edenton Awaits the Return of its Historic Clock

In a charming town known for its rich heritage, a much-loved sound is set to return. Residents of Edenton, North Carolina, eagerly anticipate the revival of the historic clock atop the Chowan County Courthouse after years of silence. This cherished landmark, which has signaled the passage of time for over a century, will once again ring out on September 18, offering both a literal and symbolic reminder of the community's enduring spirit.

A Community Celebration of History

The restoration of the courthouse clock will be celebrated with a public event at the courthouse located at 117 E. King St. The gathering, beginning at 4:45 p.m., will include insights from Pamela Wagner, chairwoman of the Friends of State Historic Sites Edenton. As the clock strikes 5 p.m., the cherished chimes will echo through downtown, symbolizing resilience and connection for all who call this area home.

The Craftsmanship Behind the Restoration

This 134-year-old timepiece, originally crafted by the Seth Thomas Clock Company in 1891, has undergone meticulous care from local retired mechanical expert Joe D’Apuzzo. Climbing into the courthouse bell tower, D'Apuzzo spent countless hours cleaning and repairing the clock's intricate mechanisms. His efforts have not only revived the clock but have also helped restore a vital piece of Edenton's identity.

Edenton's Heritage and Future Growth

The Chowan County Courthouse, built in 1767, is part of the Historic Edenton State Historic Site, which includes other notable landmarks like the James Iredell House and the Roanoke River Lighthouse. These preservation efforts play a key role in maintaining Edenton’s identity as one of North Carolina's earliest colonial capitals. As the community gathers to celebrate the clock’s restoration, it also marks a larger commitment to preserving the town’s rich history while fostering new developments in the historic district.
