Hampton Roads community cookout with Juneteenth mural in park

Chrysler Museum's Community Cookout: A Celebration of Culture

The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia, is stepping up as a cultural hub this Sunday, June 8, hosting a free community cookout that not only tantalizes the taste buds but also nourishes the soul. The event is set to run from noon to 4 p.m. and aims to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for the Hampton Roads community, celebrating the enduring legacy of Juneteenth through art, music, and fellowship.

A Day Rich in Activities

This year's Chrysler Cookout beautifully intertwines creativity and community engagement. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a community art activity led by All Americans Vote, fostering a spirit of unity and collective expression. Music provided by Peep the DJ will keep spirits high, while a curated art market, coordinated by Good Society, showcases local talent.

Connecting Through Art and Film

An especially exciting component of the event will be two screenings at the Kaufman Theater, showing a special selection of short films created by Black filmmakers at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. These films aim to highlight underrepresented voices, offering a perspective that resonates with many in Southeastern Virginia.

Food and Entertainment

Guests can indulge in a variety of local bites offered by a food truck, along with interactive lawn games and a food demonstration by Atumpan, combining culinary craft with community bonding. You might also find yourself posing for photos at the photobooth experience, creating lasting memories against the backdrop of art and culture.

Welcoming Remarks and Performances

The event will kick off with welcoming remarks from Drew Lusher, the museum’s Coordinator of Public Engagement and Learning, followed by Executive Director of All Americans Vote, Tamer Mokhtar. As the day unfolds, attendees will be entertained by musical performances from singer Amber Garrett and the dynamic group FavorNation’s Citiz3n, enriching the celebration with soulful sounds.

Join the Celebration!

This cookout is not just a day of fun; it's an opportunity to connect with your local community, appreciate the arts, and reflect on the significant history of Juneteenth. So, whether you're a longtime resident of southeastern Virginia or new to the Hampton Roads area, the Chrysler Museum invites you to partake in this vibrant afternoon filled with engagement, art, and culture. Mark your calendars, gather your friends and family, and enjoy a day where community spirit shines through!
